Your Mind Matters Too: A Simple Guide to Medicare & Mental Health Support

May 22, 2026

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it’s a good reminder that taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body—especially as we get older.

Here’s something that might surprise you: according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 5 older adults experiences a mental health concern, including depression or anxiety. And yet, many go without support—often simply because they’re not sure what’s available to them.

The good news? Medicare does provide meaningful coverage for mental health care, and understanding how it works can open the door to real support when you need it.

Understanding Mental Health Coverage Under Medicare

Medicare is designed to support both physical and mental health, with different parts working together depending on your needs:

  • Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)
Covers mental health care if you’re admitted to a hospital, including psychiatric hospitals. This includes your room, meals, nursing care, and medications during your stay.
  • Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)
Covers outpatient services like therapy, counseling, and visits with mental health professionals—whether that’s in a doctor’s office, clinic, or outpatient setting.
  • Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)
Helps cover medications, including many commonly prescribed for mental health conditions.

Together, these layers of coverage help support everything from routine counseling to more advanced care when it’s needed.

What Mental Health Services Are Covered?

Medicare beneficiaries have access to a wide range of services, including:

  • Individual and group therapy
  • Psychiatric evaluations and diagnostic testing
  • Annual depression screenings (covered once per year)
  • Substance use disorder treatment and counseling
  • Prescription medications and medication management
  • Partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs

And in many cases, telehealth services are covered too, making it easier to connect with care from the comfort and privacy of home.

Who Can Provide Care?

Medicare works with a variety of licensed professionals, including:

  • Psychiatrists and psychologists
  • Clinical social workers
  • Primary care providers (like your doctor, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant)
  • Licensed mental health counselors and marriage & family therapists

*One important note: always confirm your provider accepts Medicare to help keep your costs manageable.

What Will You Pay?

While Medicare covers a lot, there are still some out-of-pocket costs to be aware of:

  • For most outpatient services, you’ll typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after meeting your Part B deductible
  • Inpatient costs vary depending on the length of stay and type of facility
  • If you have a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) or Medicare Advantage plan, your share of costs may be lower.

Why This Matters More Than We Sometimes Realize

Mental health challenges like depression, anxiety, and loneliness can have a real impact—not just emotionally, but physically too.

And sometimes, they show up quietly. A lack of energy. Changes in sleep. Feeling disconnected.

Support—whether that’s a conversation, counseling, or the right care plan—can make a meaningful difference in how you feel day to day and how you continue to show up in your life.

Taking the First Step (It’s Simpler Than You Think)

If you or someone you love could benefit from support, here are a few easy places to start:

  • Talk with your primary care provider
  • Schedule your annual Medicare wellness visit
  • Take advantage of a covered depression screening

Sometimes the hardest part is just getting started—but you don’t have to navigate it alone.

A Gentle Reminder This Month

Taking care of your mental health isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a part of taking care of your whole self.
