Dental, Vision & Hearing Plans for Medicare Beneficiaries
Medicare plans provide extensive coverage for many health-related needs. However, dental and vision coverage can be more limited. For example, Original Medicare does not offer routine dental coverage. This gap means that services such as routine cleanings, exams, x-rays, fillings, extractions, and dentures are not covered. Medicare Part A (hospital) may cover specific dental services if they are required for a covered procedure.
For many people, being able to choose their own dentist, optometrist, or hearing provider is important. That’s why the plans we offer through our partners are designed with flexibility in mind, which means coverage you can use at the office of your choice.
Benefits of Combined Plans
The most popular plans offer well-rounded protection with features such as:
- Affordable monthly premiums (typically $31–$45, depending on age and coverage).
- Eligibility from age 18 through 85.
- Generous annual benefits—up to $1,500 per year in coverage (many other plans cap at $1,000).
- Immediate coverage for basic dental services, eye exams, and hearing exams.
- Family plan options to protect household members under one policy.
- Freedom of choice—see the providers you know and trust.
- Guaranteed acceptance—no health questions or underwriting.
- Guaranteed renewable—your policy will automatically renew each year.
- Convenient online application that only takes minutes to complete.
Options for Additional Coverage
Dental, vision, and hearing (DVH) coverage is essential for seniors. There are generally three options for Medicare beneficiaries who want ancillary coverage:
Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage): Many Medicare Advantage plans include DVH benefits. These plans can include coverage for routine dental care (i.e., cleanings and exams) and vision care (i.e., eye exams, glasses, and contact lenses).
Standalone DVH Plans: Standalone plans can be purchased separately from other Medicare coverage and include a wide range of coverage options.
Discount Plans: These are not insurance plans, but they can offer reduced rates on dental and vision services through a network of participating providers. Discount plans can provide savings on routine care and treatments, although they do not offer insurance coverage or financial protection.
Does Medicare Cover Hearing Aids?
Unfortunately, Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids or routine hearing exams. While it may seem like a benefit that should be included, Medicare Parts A and B do not provide this coverage. This is especially true since hearing naturally declines with age.
Regular hearing checkups are important for identifying hearing loss early, and when hearing aids become necessary, the costs can add up quickly for those living on a fixed income.
Options for Hearing Coverage
The good news is that you can add coverage for hearing services through a standalone Dental, Vision, and Hearing (DVH) insurance policy or sometimes through a Medicare Advantage plan. Depending on the plan, this coverage may include:
- Routine hearing exams
- Hearing aids
- Repairs and replacement supplies (such as batteries and earmolds)
This type of supplemental insurance can help reduce out-of-pocket costs and make hearing care more affordable.
