What to Do When Your Medicare Advantage Plan Ends

Highlights:

  • Your Medicare Advantage plan may be discontinued — but you have special protections.

  • You can choose a new Medicare Advantage plan, a Medigap plan, or return to Original Medicare.

  • Certain Medigap plans are available with guaranteed issue rights (no medical underwriting).

  • Important dates: AEP (Oct. 15–Dec. 7) and Special Enrollment Period (Dec. 8, 2025–Feb. 28, 2026).

Losing your Medicare Advantage (MA) coverage can feel overwhelming — especially if it disrupts long-standing relationships with your doctors or healthcare system. Unfortunately, carriers are leaving certain markets.

The good news: you’re not stuck without options.

Why Coverage Loss Happens

Many people are receiving notices that their Medicare Advantage plan is being discontinued or that their provider is leaving the plan’s network. While this is frustrating, it also triggers special protections designed to make sure you still have coverage.

Your Enrollment Options

Option 1: Switch to a new Medicare Advantage Plan.
You can review and enroll in another MAPD plan during AEP (Oct. 15–Dec. 7) or use the Special Enrollment Period (Dec. 8, 2025–Feb. 28, 2026).

Option 2: Choose a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plan.
Because your plan was discontinued, you qualify for a
guaranteed issue right. That means you can enroll in certain Medigap plans without medical underwriting — the insurance company cannot deny your application or charge you more based on your health. Pairing Medigap with Original Medicare gives you freedom to see any Medicare-accepting provider and helps limit out-of-pocket costs.

Option 3: Return to Original Medicare (Parts A & B).
If you do nothing, you’ll automatically revert to Original Medicare on January 1, 2026. However, this does not include drug coverage (Part D). Failing to enroll in a Part D plan could leave you exposed to costs and potential late penalties.
